G-Flex: The first ‘curved’ smartphone from LG

LG Electronics yesterday officially took the wraps off the LG G Flex, a smartphone curved to follow the contour of the face. The company claims that this is the first device to offer such a design in the smartphone market.

Its time now for curved surface smartphone that are trending in market, after Samsung its near town rival LG has unveiled a curved surface smartphone G Flex. Curved surface device moreover flexible screen are seems to be the new and most fascinating area for smartphone makers.     Rivals are merely battling to settle their feet in the market.



After lunch Galaxy Gear smart watch wearable device is gaining popularity. Though they have not used the flexible screen for the beginner they have done it well enough with the screen slightly horizontally curved. In near future reportedly Apple is also going to lunch a iwatch with flexible screen to compete with them, but nobody has cleared the air from Apple side yet. You can say we are heading towards a age of wearable technology like you have seen in most Hollywood action movies.

The LG G flex that was lunched yesterday has 6” vertical curved surface i.e it is curved from top to bottom but in case of Samsung it was horizontally curved. Like Samsung which released the curved Samsung round with a variant of its latest flagship Note 3, G Flex is a variant of LG G2 with the curved surface. The volume keys and power buttons are placed in the back unlike LG G2. Interestingly both the phones are available in South Korean market. It will be available through three carrier of South Korean market.

The phone uses flexible OLED screen technology to allow for a dramatic curve on the horizontal axis. The specs include thickness of the phone is between 7.9 and 8.7mm at various points, weighs 177g, and has a 6-inch 720p display. It runs on a Snapdragon 800 processor and packed with 2GB of RAM. Also houses a 13 MP camera. It is powered by a 3,500 mAh battery.


 LG has claimed of optimizing the phone for delivering better sound and voice clarity. They have also claimed that watching movies and videos will be much more fun and enjoyable especially in landscape mode due to the vertical curved screen. They have also used a curved battery to support its form factor. Although they are using curved battery and screen the chip board and a lot of component are still challenge for achieving flexible device. Of course another big challenge is comparatively high production cost.

LG reported last week an 80 billion won ($75 million) operating loss from its handset division for the third-quarter due to marketing costs surrounding a smartphone launch in August. They are trying to raise their brand value in high end market in the hope of increase in sale. Presently they need it, after all Life is not good for LG in recent past. Just wait and watch you may get to see a lot of awesome wearable device.
